A BRIEF INQUIRY INTO ONLINE RELATIONSHIPS – THE 1975

The Album Of The Century.

The 1975’s third album comes at a time in lead singer Matty Healy’s life upon which is filled with existential questions posed upon modernism and most of all, himself.

Within the album Healy uncovers truths of fear, loneliness and all around acceptance, that although the world may be a scary and sometimes immoral place, the only way to find peace is through love and kindness

The first track, a staple of the band, is self-titled The 1975. The iconic track which features on both of the band’s previous works comes with a techno tune in sync with the album’s focus on modernity and our relationship with technology. Layered with auto-tune and futuristic riffs it sets the tone for the much-anticipated album.

Track 2, also the first single to be released, is the poignantly titled Give Yourself A Try. The track screams self-love in a world so overloads with the tightened ropes of scrutiny and insecurity, an uplifting anthem that makes you want to dance in your mirror and sing into your hairbrush. The ambient sounds and lightning guitars have everyone hoping to fall in love again.

With everlasting tunes like Love It If We Made It to ones that make you feel a sudden urge to dance all night like It’s Not Living  (If It’s Not With You). The 1975 give us an album full of moments. Songs like I Couldn’t Be More in Love and Be My Mistake challenge post-modern ideas of cynicism and irony with raw emotion and flesh bearing feelings. The love letter-esque songs are reminders of the beauty of being honest and open in a time where they may find it easy to hide behind online screens and sarcasm.

Healy touches on struggles of commitment and addictions, not only to substances but to people as well. The aforementioned Be My Mistake strikes upon a moment of reality. where past mistakes come to light but seem meaningless when it comes to a newfound future.

The profound album of the year ‘ A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ ends at a height with the strikingly honest titled I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes), a very English driven 1975-esque number that showcases the best and worst of Matty Healy.

With lyrics ranging from “You wet my eyes” on the dance hit TooTimeTooTime, to “The back of your head is in the front of my mind” off Inside Your Mind, there’s no doubt with the depth and range abundant in Healy’s songwriting that this album will not be soon forgotten. A fresh-faced take on what it means to be human today, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is available now as well as tickets to their 2019 tour.
